Duo Harpverk was formed in 2007 by harpist Katie Buckley and percussionist Frank Aarnink. The duo’s intention is to commission and perform music for harp and percussion. Since beginning they have commissioned over 40 pieces from composers in Iceland, Denmark, England, Australia, and the United States.
Although they have many works from more experienced composers, the main focus of Harpverk is to commission and perform the music of young composers. Harpverk has performed in the Dark Music Days Festival 2007–2010, 2012, the 2009 Iceland Airwaves festival with Ísafold ensemble, Kírkjulistahátið 2010, and several concerts on the 15:15 music series at the Nordic House. They are featured on Daníel Bjarnason’s acclaimed album Processions performing his piece Skelja. Being active in the cultivation of young composers, Katie and Frank gave harp and percussion master classes at Listaháskóli Íslands (Iceland Academy of the Arts) in 2009. The result of the master classes were five new compositions that were performed on a special concert at the Dark Music Days Festival in 2010. In 2012, the duo worked with 4 more young Arts Academy composers and created a concert of their music on the Dark Music Days festival. The Duo created a minimalistic improvisation for Swedish artist Ellen Malmgard which was played along side her exhibit Glasdialogen in late 2010.
Duo Harpverk embarked on their first concert tour in Denmark during summer of 2010. They performed a concert in Copenhagen as well as performing at the Open Days Festival in Aalborg. In February 2011, the duo toured the Netherlands which included a performance on the Icelandic Music Days in Amsterdam. In the summer of 2012, Katie and Frank will embark on a tour to the Faroe Islands. They will perform music by Faroese composers on the Summartónar festival at several venues in the islands.
Duo Harpverk is currently working on a CD at Greenhouse studios (IS) of the music they have commissioned to date. The CD is scheduled to be released in 2012.
